Energy-Saving Tips for Fall

As the leaves begin to change and temperatures drop, fall is the perfect time to prepare your home for the colder months ahead.

Idaho Power offers several energy efficiency tips for the fall season:

  • Replace or clean your air filters in preparation for the heating season. Clean filters improve efficiency and help your system last longer.
  • Inspect and clean vents. Ensure all vents and registers are clean and unobstructed to help with efficient air distribution.
  • Check for air leaks around outside doors and windows. If you can feel a draft, caulk, add weatherstripping, or adjust hardware for a better fit. This also helps keep insects and spiders from coming inside as the weather cools.
  • Use sunlight for natural heat. Open curtains or blinds on south facing windows during the day to allow sunlight to naturally heat your home. Close them at night to reduce chill and keep the warmth inside.
  • Try setting your thermostat to 68°F when you’re at home and awake. This maintains a good balance between comfort and energy efficiency. When you’re asleep or away, lowering the thermostat by 7 to 10°F can help you save up to 10% annually on heating costs.
