As you prepare for holiday festivities, keep safety top of mind by following these important electrical safety reminders:
- Whether plugging in slow cookers or strings of lights, don’t overload outlets or power strips.
- Inspect power and extension cords — especially if you haven’t used them in a while — before plugging them in. Replace anything that’s damaged or frayed.
- Don’t plug large appliances, electric heaters, or generators into extension cords.
- Plug kitchen appliances and outdoor lights into ground-fault circuit interrupter (GCFI)-protected outlets.
- Don’t place cords where they can be damaged by walking, where people can trip on them, or where damage can go unnoticed — like under rugs or on sidewalks.
- Use LED light strings, which are more efficient and safer than incandescent bulbs because they produce less heat.
