Watch for Power Lines, Farm Equipment and Cows

As farmers, field workers and homeowners enter the busy fall season, Idaho Power offers reminders to help everyone stay safe when working outside near electrical equipment.

  • Be aware of overhead power lines, and assume all power lines are energized and dangerous.
  • When moving tall equipment or clearing debris from irrigation pipes, use a spotter and move equipment horizontally.
  • Never stack anything like hay bales, machinery or other items under power lines.
  • If you’re doing fall landscaping, like planting trees, ensure their growth won’t interfere with power lines, and call 811 two days in advance to mark underground utility lines.
  • Operate equipment a safe distance from power lines (at least 10 feet, sometimes more). To learn the safe working distance for each power line and when to contact Idaho Power, visit idahopower.com/safety.
  • If you or a contractor need to perform work and are unsure if you are a safe distance from power lines, give Idaho Power a call at 208-388-2323 for assistance.

And a fall safety note for drivers—watch for farm equipment and cattle on the road, as cattle are moved from the pasture closer to home.
