Watch Out for Power Poles When Driving

Whether you’re driving to work or running errands around town, Idaho Power wants you to take extra care when driving. Hundreds of vehicle accidents with electrical equipment, such as power poles, occur each year, especially during icy and snowy conditions. Power outages can also occur as a result from these accidents.

When roads are icy, slow down and watch for power poles. If you see a vehicle collision involving a power pole or notice power lines on the ground, stay as far away as possible, but at least 100 feet. Always assume the line is energized and dangerous, and call 911 or Idaho Power immediately at 1-800-488-6151.

If a line falls on your vehicle, stay inside if safe to do so. If you must leave the vehicle because of a fire or other life-threatening situation, jump out and as far away as possible with both feet landing on the ground at the same time. Keeping your feet together, shuffle as far away from the scene as possible — at least 100 feet. DO NOT touch the vehicle and the ground at the same time. You can watch a video demonstration on Idaho Power’s YouTube channel.
