National Hydropower Day Reminds Us of the Power of Water

Reliable, affordable and clean: hydroelectric power remains the single biggest source of electricity for Idaho Power customers, a fact worth celebrating on National Hydropower Day Wednesday.

The National Hydropower Association chose “Cleaner Communities” as the theme for this year’s National Hydropower Day, highlighting the power of water to not only generate electricity, but to provide other benefits to communities.

That’s certainly true in Idaho Power’s service area, where the company’s 17 hydro projects on the Snake River and its tributaries also contribute to recreation, irrigation and flood control. Hydro serves as the backbone for the company’s Clean Today, Cleaner Tomorrow® initiative to provide 100% clean energy by 2045.

The public can get a look at hydropower’s early days at the historic powerhouse museum at Swan Falls Dam south of Kuna. It’s open for self-guided tours each Saturday through Sept. 3 from 10 a.m.—4 p.m.
